The first part, with Caroline going to work for the irascible Mrs Catling, was intriguing and well written, ibdiscretion I was already wondering where the story was leading, but the country house shenanigans were hardly worth waiting for and the ending was rushed.
Right up there with the best of Georgette Heyer and the author owes a huge debt to Jane Austen. She had a quick tongue, an active fancy, and a turn for wit, but these she employed, in truth, somewhat as a shield behind which she could shelter. Caroline leaves Sophia to live with her aunt’s family at Wythorpe Manor, where she makes mogran with the luminous Isabella Milner, who is preparing for her wedding to Richard Leabrook.

Well done you, Jude Morgan. And in the midst of it all, Caroline, with her unfailing countenance and brave face, only emerged from it all stronger in the end.
Caroline Fortune is a woman of good sense and good humor, both of which she’s needed in order to survive. The character of Stephen Milner has probably become one of my favorite characters in historical fiction.
Jude Morgan’s Austenesque novel started indisccretion enough, with a wryly cynical heroine fallen on hard times, but the plot was slow to develop and the characters never really came to life for me. Without a doubt, one of the best undiscretion I have read this year!!! Schooled by her gambling father, Caroline supposedly plays a very mean game of whist and other far less respectable card games. But, much to her dismay, she is just as quick to realise that love and romance are not what some gentlemen seek and finds herself indiscretuon implicated in their indiscretions.

I have to admit to skimming the last third. What a charming book. However, the author’s verbosity made everything so boring.

A young woman in an exquisitely appointed manor in the English countryside complains, “There is nothing very grand, or exciting, or even terrible, to be met with in a moryan like this: The secondary characters have distinct voices and personalities, and neither they nor the plot is cribbed from Austen unlike the majority of Regencies written today.
Georgette Heyer is great in her own right, but she really dealt with a different societal world than Jane did — the aristocracy vs. It is as the cover claims a bit like Georgette Heyer, although not as funny.
What’s a dialog tag? Really charming light read in the style of Jane Austen or I think, more appropriately Georgette Heyer. She wrote one book I liked, and all the rest have been a frustration, but I keep hoping, because of the one I liked.
